TC 3.3 Telematics: Control via Communication Networks, Telematics Application (TA) 2016

Keynote Plenaries

Prof. Magnus Jonsson (Halmstad University)

Connected Vehicles

Networked vehicles enable a number of applications for, e.g., comfort, safety, reduced fuel-consumption and efficient use of infrastructure. Vehicles become more and more intelligent and cooperative driving and fully autonomous vehicles become reality. In this evolution, there will be a number of challenges to attack. This talk presents a panorama on the connected vehicles scenario, approaching subject such as road-side-to vehicle communication, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, dissemination and forwarding protocols, communication issues in autonomous driving, measurements and performance evaluation.

Short bio: Professor of Real-time Computer Systems, at the School of Information Technology. Appointed in 2003. The majority of computers used today do not look like "everyday" computers in an office environment. Instead computers are included as embedded components in various products which we use, controlling telephone exchanges, car engines, electrical grids, aircraft etc. As a rule these embedded computers need to be able to exchange information in real-time ie the calculations being performed not only need to be correct but the point in time when the result is transmitted is also of prime importance.Magnus Jonsson's research is directed towards the architecture of embedded real-time systems, real-time communication, optical connective networks and connective networks for parallel and distributed real-time systems. These areas are assuming more importance as embedded real-time systems increasingly respond to rigorous performance demands and become commonplace. In other words higher demands are being put on communication networks and their real-time characteristics.

Cognitive Internet of Things

This talk will focus on the tools to support the new era of computing developed by IBM called Cognitive Computing and how researchers and the industry can generate value from it. A special focus will be giving on Cognitive IoT. A huge number of IoT devices are generating tons of data. Managing the complexities of connecting such heterogeneous devices and how to effectively integrate these IoT data with data from other sources (e.g., social media, ERPs, etc) to generate valuable insights is challenging. The value comes from the improvement of such integration, automation and analysis to: apply real-time analytics to monitor current conditions and respond accordingly; and leverage cognitive analytics with both structured and unstructured data to understand situations, reason through options and learn as conditions change.

Cel. Jorgito Matiuzzi Stocchero (Brazilian Army)

Brazilian Army Command and Control Telematics Applications

This talk features Brazilian Army telematics applications to support Command and Control (C2) operations focusing their usage in recent big events in Brazil, like FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games. Command and Control is the exercise of authority and direction by a properly designated individual (commander) over assigned resources (forces) in the accomplishment of a common goal (mission). In the context focused in this talk, the C2 is used to coordinate the usage of law enforcement authorities’ resources to ensure the security during big events such as the World Cup. To support operations with this goal, the Brazilian Army benefits from the support of C2 Telematics Applications, which will be highlighted in this talk.

Short bio: Bachelor's at Military Science from Agulhas Negras Military Academy (1990), bachelor's at Communications Engineering from Military Institute of Engineering (1996), and master's at Electric Engineering from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2004). Currently is enrolled in the Politics, Strategy and Administration Course at Army General Staff School. Works in the Information and Communication Technology infrastructure of the Brazilian Army as former Head of the First Center of Telematics of Area, located in Porto Alegre, RS. Has past experience in systems engineering as part of the team responsible for the development of the SIVAM (System for the Vigilance of the Amazon) Project.

Arquimedes Martinez Canedo (Siemens Corporate Technology)

Short bio: Dr. Arquimedes Canedo is currently a Principal Key Expert Scientist at Siemens Corporate Technology. In this role, he provides technical leadership to a team of 150 scientists and engineers in the area of Automation and Control. His research interests include cyber-physical (production) systems, design automation, programming languages and compilers. He holds more than 30 patents and has published more than 40 papers in top journals and conferences.

Carlos Gurgel (Brazilian Space Agency (AEB))

Brazilian Satellite Programs: Challenges and Achievements

Sri Krishnan (Ryerson University - CAN)

Digital Healthcare in the Era of Internet of Things

This talk will cover physiological signal sensing, wearable medical devices, approaches for pre-processing (denoising, detrending and artifact removals), techniques for representing and understanding variability and variety in data, and home-based healthcare. Experimental results and suggestions on how these information processing and telecommunications methods could be applied in the context of Internet of Things for "quantified" self and daily/frequent monitoring of activities such as cardiac, gait, sleep and human movements.

Short bio: Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan received the B.E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Anna University, Madras, India, in 1993, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1996 and 1999 respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada in July 1999, and currently he is a Professor in the Department. Sri Krishnan holds the Canada Research Chair position in Biomedical Signal Analysis, and he is also a recipient of the Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer Award, Achievement in Innovation Award, IEEE Exemplary Service Award, and Young Engineer Achievement Award from Engineers’ Canada. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario.
